How to Remove Backgrounds Without AI (and what to use instead)
Every background remover you find today leads with AI. Upload your photo to someone's server, let their model chew on it, download the result, pay monthly for the privilege. A lot of people are not comfortable with that. Some don't want theirproduct photos on anyone's server. Some just don't trust what happens to an image after it leaves their computer.
However, removing backgrounds is older than AI. Film studios were doing it with color science decades before neural networks existed, and those techniques still work great, especially on product photos. METHOD 1: COLOR KEY
This is the green screen trick. If your background is a mostly even color, a white sweep, a colored backdrop, a plain wall, you can key it out with pure color math.
1. Open your photo in MadPeel and click Remove Background to get into the editor.
2. Open the Color Key section in the side panel.
3. Pick the eyedropper from the toolbar and click your background. MadPeel samples the color.
4. Set Compose to "Replace AI mask." From this point the cutout is decided entirely by the key, not by any neural network.
5. Tune two sliders. Tolerance decides how far from the sampled colorstill counts as background. Softness decides how gently the edge fades.
On a product shot against a plain backdrop this gives you a clean cutout in seconds, and every pixel of that decision is simple, explainable color math. Doing a whole folder? There's an "Apply Key to All Images" button. One key, every photo.
METHOD 2: DIFFERENCE MATTE
This one is borrowed from visual effects, take one extra photo of your setup with the product removed. Just the empty backdrop. That's your reference plate.
1. In MadPeel, open the Difference Matte section.
2. Click "Set Reference Plate" and load the empty shot.
3. MadPeel subtracts one photo from the other. Whatever changed between the two shots is your product. Whatever stayed the same is background, and it disappears.
4. Tune Threshold and Softness to taste.
